Senior second baseman Alex Moton was the 2026 recipient of the prestigious No. 5 jersey. Moton is pictured with the original No. 5 wearer and current assistant coach Caleb Brooks along with Byrd head coach Greg Williams.
The Tradition of the No. 5 Jersey
In 2016, pitcher Connor Gulledge asked coach Greg Williams to wear jersey No. 5. Gulledge asked specifically for jersey No. 5 because pitcher Caleb Brooks, who graduated in 2015, wore the jersey the previous season, and Gulledge said he wanted to carry himself the same way Brooks did. Gulledge further expressed that Brooks embodied everything the Byrd Baseball program believes and instills in its players who graduate after being a part of the program. Gulledge wanted to emulate Brooks’ actions as a teammate for his senior year. Thus, the tradition of the No. 5 jersey was born. Since then, the previous No. 5 jersey wearers have chosen the next recipient. It is a player who would best represents Byrd Baseball through their actions on and off the field. Particularly, a player who is Relentless, Together, Energetic, Tough and Selfless.
