WEDNESDAY WILL BE A VIRTUAL DAY SO STUDENTS AND STAFF CAN PARTICIPATE IN A DAY OF SERVICE AROUND THE COMMUNITY IN HONOR OF OUR 100 DAYS OF SCHOOL AND OUR CENTENNIAL YEAR.
This year, we have two winners for the National Society of Colonial Dames Essay contest: Duncan Rowe and Audrey Welch. They will be going during June to the workshop as the prize for winning.
Buzzfest – Do you have a hidden or not-so-hidden talent and want to show it to the school? If you do, sign up to audition for Buzzfest! Buzzfest is Student Council’s annual skit and talent show and will be April 11th. The Google form to sign up for auditions is located on the global announcements on Canvas. The last day to sign up is January 31st, and the auditions will be February 4th and 5th from 4-6 PM.

Students – Louisiana Tech University will be hosting their annual recruitment event “Engage Education” for Juniors and Seniors, who are interested in a future career in teaching. The event will take place on January 31st, 2025, at Woodard Hall on the campus of Louisiana Tech University. The event will run from 10:00AM – 1:45PM. During the event, prospective students will tour the campus, learn more about the Curriculum, Instruction, and Leadership program, and participate in activities that inform them about being an early childhood, elementary, or secondary teacher. Lunch for all attendees will be provided via our sponsor, Louisiana National Bank. During the event we will also be awarding a up to $1000 scholarships to prospective CIL students!

Since it’s the 100th year, Student Council and Drama Club are starting a fun Scavenger Hunt every other week for Byrd students. Look around the school and follow the hints to receive a prize!
Rules:
- Do not move, break, or destroy school or personal property to reach the item.
- Bring Winner paper to Mrs.Carberry in room 202.
- You cannot search during class time.
- You must bring the item to Mrs.Carberry in between classes.
- Winner will be announced on the following Monday.

Students – “Sew”cial Club needs your plastic grocery bags. We are making PLARN mats for the homeless and you can help! Send your plastic grocery type bags (Wal-Mart, Dollar General, Target, etc). to school with your student and have them deliver them to the library. We need 700 bags to make each mat so send us what you can spare. We appreciate your efforts on behalf of this project.

We will jam to your favorite songs, have Johnny’s Pizza with lots of snacks plusssss take all the pictures with the multiple fabulous Valentines themed backdrops and make friendship bracelets! While we will be having soooo much fun together, we are also going to take this opportunity to give back to Byrd and our community! There will be stations to make Valentines goodie bags for our sister school, Broadmoor Stem Elementary and another station to decorate paper “Candy Hearts” that will fill the halls of Byrd on February 13th to spread love and encouragement! I promise you… it is a night you don’t want to miss!

Freshman – Attention Freshmen who are interested in having fun while learning about leadership and developing your leadership skills…Join Lyle Leaders! Applications available outside the main office or Ms. Waters’ room S112. Applications due Feb 12, 2025.
Students – Jackets, do you want to ROCK? Do you have the want to create your own rock band and jam and perform with other rock stars like you? Then fill out the interest form for the C.E. Byrd Rock Band. Scan the QR codes around the school or talk to Mr. Mayeux (my-you) in room 109 or G1 for more information.

Wrestling – Think you want a challenge? Wrestling season workouts have started! If you think you may be interested come down to wrestling room after school and speak with coaches. You can also sign up through Aktivate. Don’t wait, get in the best shape of your life!!
Having trouble understanding a concept in math or science? Need help studying for the big test? Or ACT prep before your next attempt? Science National Honor society has got your back with tutoring from some of our strongest math and science students at Byrd. Starting this week, they are available in the library every Wednesday, Thursdays, and Fridays from 7:45-8:15 am. No sign up necessary. Just show up. See Mrs. Comerford for more information.

JOIN Art Club and come create fun things with us! Applications can be found in the hall outside the art room, B7, in the basement. You will see the applications hanging on one of the art showcase bulletin boards. Art club is a service club and we meet throughout the year sporadically after school to work on projects. You do not have to be in art class to join. The deadline to join art club is Halloween!

Students – ACT fee waivers are available in the Counseling Office for juniors and seniors who meet the criteria for free/reduced lunch. Students are eligible for 4 fee waivers during their junior and senior years. When registering for the ACT with a fee waiver, students receive free ACT prep available through their ACT accounts. Please see your counselor if you have any questions. Students must apply for free/reduced lunch at https://www.myschoolapps.com/ You will receive an e-mail from the Child Nutrition Program. You must provide this to the counseling office to receive a waiver.

Presidential Volunteer Information
Scholarships & Contests
Scholarship – The AFCEA scholarship is available in the Counseling Office or the Class of 2025 Counseling Canvas page. Applicants must be planning on pursuing a STEM degree related to the fields of Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Communications, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field. Examples include: Biomedical Engineering or Criminal Law/Cyber Forensics. NOTE: AFCEA Executive Council members reserve the right to determine if any selected degree program is eligible according to the above criteria Students must have a 3.0/4.0 gpa. Application and additional information is attached. The deadline to apply is February 1, 2025.
Applications are now available for the 2025-2026 Bobby Cates Hicks SMART program. This is an opportunity for seniors to get research and lab experience through LSUS- Health as a part of their school course work. Applicants must be current juniors and have A’s and B’s in all science classes. Also, they must be currently enrolled in advanced science classes, have a 28 either composite or in science or math, have exemplary attendance and behavior, and commit to work for 7 weeks over the summer before senior year and for 10 hours each week during the school year. If interested, please see Mrs. Comerford in Room 211 for the QR code to the application or search for Bobby Cates Hicks SMART program to find all information. Applications due February 28th.
Seniors – The Reynolds Foundation Scholarship will go live on December 1st and has a deadline of January 31, 2025. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to Caddo Parish students. Students must have a 2.5 gpa and plan to enroll as a full-time student at a 4-year, 2-year, or vocational school. Application is available in the Counseling Office or the Class of 2025 Canvas page.
Scholarship Opportunity – 2 year senior Science National Honor Society members have an opportunity to receive up to $1000 in scholarship money. For more information and to get the link see Mrs. Comerford in Room 211.
The Women’s Republican Club of Shreveport is offering $1500 scholarships. Applicants must be female, age 17 or over, registered as a Republican, and have a 3.0 grade point average. Applications are available in the Counseling Office or on the Class of 2025 Canvas page. Deadline to apply is March 31.
The Louisiana Life Safety & Security Association scholarship is available to children of active-duty Law Enforcement, Fire Service Personnel & First Responders. Applications and guidelines are available at https://llssa.org/benefits/scholarships/ or in the Counseling Office. Deadline to apply is April 1.
Elks Student of the month scholarship applications are available in the counseling office or the Class of 2025 Canvas page. Each month (October-April) a scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding senior boy and senior girl who demonstrate exemplary standards. Students should be well-rounded with leadership, citizenship, service, and scholarship qualities. Students will compete against other high school students in Caddo-Bossier area. Applications are due by the 10th of each month and only need to be submitted once.

Seniors – The FAFSA is now available at studentaid.gov. You will receive a FAFSA guide during the senior class meeting
today. If you miss the meeting, you can pick one up in the Counseling Office. The pdf of this guide is available in the
FAFSA module on the Class of 2025 Canvas page. The FAFSA is a free financial aid application to help you pay the cost
of college or technical training after high school. This application will cover TOPS, federal grants (money that does not
have to be paid back), and student loans (money that does have to be paid back). When completing the FAFSA, you will need to submit the 2025-2026 application.
