Leap 2025 End of Course Testing window will be December 3- December 20th. The Fall test administration typically is for students who have scored unsatisfactory on previously taken tests. Come get into the holiday season with choir! The Choir Christmas concert is TOMORROW at 6:00pm in the auditorium. The admission is free!

Since it’s the 100th year, Student Council and Drama Club are starting a fun Scavenger Hunt every other week for Byrd students. Look around the school and follow the hints to receive a prize!

Rules:

  • Do not move, break, or destroy school or personal property to reach the item.
  • Bring Winner paper to Mrs.Carberry in room 202.
  • You cannot search during class time.
  • You must bring the item to Mrs.Carberry in between classes.
  • Winner will be announced on the following Monday.

Community Service – Students who have completed 80 hours of community service in grades 9-12 can receive a community service diploma endorsement. Seniors need to complete the student documentation form(s) and return to Mrs. Byrd in the counseling office by January 9. They must be signed by the person verifying the community service activity. Underclassmen can return forms to their counselor as community service activities are completed. Have a love for animals?  The Science National Honor Society is now accepting abstracts for the 6th annual
Mendeleevian Society Symposium:  The Animal Kingdom:  unveiling the secrets of the wild.  To participate sign up by
scanning the QR code on Canvas or stop by Room 211.  Abstracts are due by Friday, January 17th.  For more
information or questions see Mrs. Comerford in room 211.
Students – Louisiana Tech University will be hosting their annual recruitment event “Engage Education” for Juniors and Seniors, who are interested in a future career in teaching. The event will take place on January 31st, 2025, at Woodard Hall on the campus of Louisiana Tech University. The event will run from 10:00AM – 1:45PM. During the event, prospective students will tour the campus, learn more about the Curriculum, Instruction, and Leadership program, and participate in activities that inform them about being an early childhood, elementary, or secondary teacher. Lunch for all attendees will be provided via our sponsor, Louisiana National Bank. During the event we will also be awarding a up to $1000 scholarships to prospective CIL students!

Wrestling – Think you want a challenge? Wrestling season workouts have started! If you think you may be interested come down to wrestling room after school and speak with coaches. You can also sign up through Aktivate. Don’t wait, get in the best shape of your life!!
Having trouble understanding a concept in math or science? Need help studying for the big test? Or ACT prep before your next attempt? Science National Honor society has got your back with tutoring from some of our strongest math and science students at Byrd. Starting this week, they are available in the library every Wednesday, Thursdays, and Fridays from 7:45-8:15 am. No sign up necessary. Just show up. See Mrs. Comerford for  more information.

Students – ACT fee waivers are available in the Counseling Office for juniors and seniors who meet the criteria for free/reduced lunch. Students are eligible for 4 fee waivers during their junior and senior years. When registering for the ACT with a fee waiver, students receive free ACT prep available through their ACT accounts. Please see your counselor if you have any questions. Students must apply for free/reduced lunch at https://www.myschoolapps.com/  You will receive an e-mail from the Child Nutrition Program. You must provide this to the counseling office to receive a waiver.

ASTRA CLUB – Happy October ladies! We are so excited for a great start of the year! We are so proud of those of you who participated in the months of August and September in our Astra events. And we have a lot of you working towards the 100 hours of service with service with your churches and community as well! All of that is amazing! Be sure to log any and all hours on your log sheet but don’t double dip with Z-Club. We would like for you to have 10 hours completed by the end of each nine weeks but realize many of you have not gotten that done. So, we are going to extend that into the 2nd nine weeks and allow you to get 20 cumulative hours before you leave us for Christmas break! Be sure to watch the modules for ways you can get involved.

Scholarships & Contests

Poster Contests – The Security Department of Caddo Parish School System, Division of Mental Health, Wellness, and Safe Schools, is sponsoring several poster contests to highlight various prevention initiatives listed below. We encourage our Byrd students to participate in these contests! Please turn the posters in to Mrs. Panos by the deadlines listed.
  1. Mental Health Awareness Week – Theme: “No Mind Left Behind” DEADLINE 12-13-24
Contest Rules:
  1. Your poster must be 11 inches by 14 inches.
  2. One poster per individual. No group work, please.
  3. No glitter
  4. Must be flat
  5. Judging Criteria:  Originality, Impact (The theme must be somewhere on the poster.), Neatness
  6. Do not display name or school on front of the poster

 

Contest – The John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest is available at www.jfklibrary.org/essaycontest. Students in grades 9-12 must write an original and creative essay that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage. Top 25 Students Receive Awards- First-place prize is $10,000. The deadline to apply is 1/17/25.

 

Seniors – The Reynolds Foundation Scholarship will go live on December 1st and has a deadline of January 31, 2025. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to Caddo Parish students. Students must have a 2.5 gpa and plan to enroll as a full-time student at a 4-year, 2-year, or vocational school. Application is available in the Counseling Office or the Class of 2025 Canvas page.

Elks Student of the month scholarship applications are available in the counseling office or the Class of 2025 Canvas page. Each month (October-April) a scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding senior boy and senior girl who demonstrate exemplary standards. Students should be well-rounded with leadership, citizenship, service, and scholarship qualities. Students will compete against other high school students in Caddo-Bossier area. Applications are due by the 10th of each month and only need to be submitted once.

 

The Willis Knighton/Independence Bowl Community Service Scholarship application is available in the Counseling Office and on the Class of 2025 Canvas Page. One $2500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior with plans to attend a four-year college. Students must have a 3.0 minimum grade point average and provide documented dedication to community service limited to junior and senior years only. Students must submit applications to Mrs. Byrd in the Counseling Office by 4pm on Monday, October 14.

Seniors –  The FAFSA is now available at studentaid.gov. You will receive a FAFSA guide during the senior class meeting
today. If you miss the meeting, you can pick one up in the Counseling Office. The pdf of this guide is available in the
FAFSA module on the Class of 2025 Canvas page. The FAFSA is a free financial aid application to help you pay the cost
of college or technical training after high school. This application will cover TOPS, federal grants (money that does not
have to be paid back), and student loans (money that does have to be paid back). When completing the FAFSA, you will need to submit the 2025-2026 application.
