Students – Come support your Lady Jacket Volleyball team as they take on Airline in the District match-up this evening at 5:00 pm.

Congratulations to our swimmers who shined in the High School Invitational on Saturday! Both the Boys and Girls placed 1st in the team events. Aiden Kiihnel, Graham Carter, Caston Feazel, and Isaac Andrews all placed 1st in their events, and the Boys Relay foursome consisting of Eli Griffith, Jackson Cooper, Conly Bradford and Jurandir Neto placed 6th in the Freestyle Relay and 8th in the Medley Relay.  Cailyn Bradford and Marina Klein both had first place finishes in their event, Hannah Howard placed 2nd, Caroline Carberry, Sara Heflin and Riley Quinlan placed 3rd, Taylor Garsee placed 4th and Mary Juneau placed 6 in their events. Division I State Swim Meet Qualifying Times were earned by Cailyn Bradford and Hanna Howard.  Way to Go Jackets!

Students – TODAY in the Senior Parking Lot after school from 4:30 to 6:00 P.M., Student Council will host the first-ever Fall Carnival. Come out and join the fun our clubs around campus have planned! Key Club officers will have a Dunking Booth, NHS is hosting a Cake Walk, the Music Appreciation Club will play spooky, seasonal music, Beta Club will host a Pie your Teacher in the face, Astra Club is sponsoring door prizes for the best costumes, and much, much more! Raising Cane’s will be available for purchase for $5.00, so bring some cash!

Students – The 2022-2023 Bowling season is about to begin! There will be an interest meeting on Wednesday, October 27 at 8:00 am in room 325. Tryouts begin November 1st.  Contact Mrs. Rowe if you are unable to attend the meeting. 

Students – Harrington House will be here for yearbook make-up pictures on Tuesday, November 1, from 7:30 am until 10:00 am.  If you did not have your picture taken before, please make sure to have it taken on this date.

Students – Wrestling practice has started!!! Please go online under Byrd athletics and fill out paperwork. We will be at Byrd wrestling room, next to football field from 5-7 pm during fall break. And right after school when school resumes! Come test yourself!!!!

PSAT 2022 – The attached list of students will complete their answer sheets on Monday, October 24, in the Learning Center from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The same students will take the PSAT on Tuesday, October 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. CLICK HERE for list.

Students – The Mendeleevian Society Presents our first NASA speaker of the year on Tuesday, October 25th, at 6:30 pm in the Learning Center.  Come Zoom with NASA researcher Mr. Alexandar Blanchard as he presents his research in 3D printing in Microgravity.  All are welcome.

Students taking dual enrollment through Louisiana Tech University – The deadline to withdraw from a course with a grade of “W” is next Friday, October 28. Please see Mrs. Lacy or Mrs. Byrd in the Counseling Office for a withdrawal form. Students with grades of C or below should consider withdrawing from the course.

ACT Fee Waivers are available in the Counseling Office for juniors and seniors who meet the criteria for free/reduced lunch. Students are eligible for 4 fee waivers during their junior and senior years. When registering for the ACT with a fee waiver, students receive free ACT prep available through their ACT accounts. Please see your counselor if you have any questions.

Seniors – You must complete one of the following financial aid steps IN ORDER TO GRADUATE: 1)Complete the FAFSA (available at studentaid.gov) This is your TOPS application, as well as application for federal grants and student loans; 2) Complete the Louisiana TOPS form- if you are not completing the FAFSA (available at mylosfa.la.gov). If you choose this step, you must print a confirmation and bring it to the Counseling Office; 3) A parent or legal custodian, or a student legally emancipated or of the legal age of majority, may certify a waiver in writing to the LEA (See Mrs. Byrd for this form) . Only one step is required- you will not complete the FAFSA and the TOPS form. The FAFSA is also the TOPS application. The FAFSA application is available beginning October 1st. Students should complete the 2023-2024 FAFSA application using 2021 income tax information. Calling all students – The Mendeleevian Society is looking for submissions for our annual Mendeleevian Society Symposium in March. Student Opportunities:

Astra Club Members – Did you attend South Highlands Magnet School?  Would you like to volunteer at their Fall Carnival?  The date is Thursday, October 27, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Sign up in Mrs. Prothro’s office!

Students – Providence House is pleased to announce the re-launch of our YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL (YAC). These young leaders will give a voice to a chronic issue that plagues our community: homelessness! YAC will serve as a 14-member advisory group to our current Board of Directors, have the opportunity to participate in board meetings as well as establish and lead their own initiatives and projects. StudentsTAC (teen advisory council) is looking to get back started! TAC is a group from the YWCA LEAD Program.  The young ladies that take part of this opportunity would take on leadership roles and assist with guiding the LEAD Program here at YWCA. The LEAD Program serves pre-teen and teen girls in our community through empowerment sessions.  The sessions address topics such as: leadership, social skills, proper communication, self esteem, etc. THIS LINK will provide the girls with an overview of expectations and an application.  Or call 318-771-3858 should you need any further information. Astra Club – Common Ground needs help with a Halloween activity on Thursday, October 27 after school from 4:30-6:30 pm. Email Mrs. Prothro at MProthro@caddoschools.org if you can volunteer.  Also, they need candy for their activity.  One bag of candy will count for one hour of volunteer service. Bring candy to Mrs. Prothro’s office by Monday, October 24th.

Student of the Year – We are beginning the process of selecting our 2023 Student of the Year. The selection process and procedures for resolving issues and disputes related to the selection of candidates are attached. Students 9-12 th grades – Do you have 100 or more volunteer hours from March, 2022 to March 1, 2023? If so, you are eligible for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award which is a national award to recognize people who are committed to community service to make our world a better place. Please bring your volunteer sheets with your total number of volunteer hours to Mrs. Prothro or email them to her at MProthro@caddoschools.org. If you have any questions, please call (364-5455) or email Mrs. Prothro. Any community service through school, nonprofit organizations and church activities can be counted toward your total number of community service hours. Attached is a volunteer log sheet if you would like to use it; however, you do not have to use this one. I will accept any log sheets that has the activities and hours listed. Perspectives is now accepting entries for this year’s publication. Perspectives is C.E. Byrd’s literary magazine. We publish all types of creative writing and visual art created by current Byrd students. Selected entries are published in a beautiful, full-color magazine printed at the end of the school year. All students who are published in the magazine will receive a free copy to enjoy. Look for QR codes around the school or ask your English teacher for the entry form. Deadline: February 3.
