Presidential Volunteer Service AwardHours for this award are due on or before 2/29/24.  Seniors will receive cords to wear at graduation as well as a certificate.  9th-11th Graders will receive a certificate.  This is a national award for those students who have 50 hours of community service in 9th grade and 100 hours of community service in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades.  The total number of hours must be from March 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024.  See Mrs. Prothro if you have any questions.  Many of you have turned in your hours, and Mrs. Prothro appreciates those who have gotten it to her early.
Get your tickets to Byrd Drama‘s spring musical, Mean Girls High School Version. Performances are February 29-March 2, at 6 PM and March 3, at 3 PM. Louisiana Youth Seminar – Lyle Leaders – If you are interested in attending this leadership camp this summer at LSU in Baton Rouge, please see Mrs. Prothro.  I have a few scholarships.  They will go to the first students who sign up online.  Some have picked up the information, but no one is signed up yet.
Fairfield Field Day – Permission slips are due to Mrs. Prothro ASAP.  They were due last week.  I already have 18 signed up and only about 20 can go.

Contest – The Shreveport Bar Association is sponsoring an essay contest for high school juniors and seniors with cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The essay should be 500-750 words, typed, double-spaced, 12 point font. All entries should reflect a student’s interpretation of the Law Day 2024 theme: Voices of Democracy, and respond to the prompt provided. The deadline to submit entries is April 19. Peer Initiative safeTALK training permission slips are due to Ms. Richey in S111 absolutely no later than March 1, and

Attention all Byrd students – Sign up to participate in Byrd’s “Mock ACT Day” on Saturday, March 2, from 8:00 am until noon. Students will take a free, full-length ACT practice test under similar testing conditions to the real ACT test. Students will receive their Composite Score before they leave, in addition to which questions they missed on the practice test. Although the score is not a real reportable score, this practice will be very valuable to the students when they take the real ACT test! Testing – On Wednesday, March 6th, all 9th-grade students will take the PreACT, all 10th-grade students will take the ACT, 11th and 12th grade students will be virtual.  On March 20th  all 11th-grade students and a select group of 12th-grade students will take the ACT, 9th and 10th-grade students will be virtual.  A pretest session will be held on Tuesday 2/27 during 1st and 2nd period for 9th and 10th-grade students and during 5th  and 6th period for 11th and 12th-grade students are scheduled to test. Testing list will room assignments will be posted this week.
If you interested in joining the Byrd Marching Band Flagline team there will be a Parent meeting March 7th at 5:30 in the Band Room. Tryout dates will be March 19th -22nd from 4:15-6:00.

CE Byrd High School Marching Band is looking for new members for the Color Guard!
If you are interested in joining the Byrd Marching Band there will be a parent meeting March 7th at 5:30 pm in the Band Room. Tryout dates will be March 19th -22nd from 4:15-6:00.

Pre-Med Day for college students is on Saturday, March 9thand for high school students is on Sunday, March 10th and attendance is $100, which includes lunch. Legislative Youth Advisory Council – The Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) is accepting applications for membership from high school students who have an interest in representing the voices of young people around the state. LYAC is an annually appointed body composed entirely of students that tackle issues affecting the youth of Louisiana. The purpose of LYAC is to facilitate communication between youth and the legislature, and to give students a unique opportunity to be involved in the workings of state government. The Council studies and addresses a variety of issues of importance to young people such as education, mental health, civic engagement, the environment, and school safety. Members of the Council are selected from a large pool of applicants who display a strong interest in civic involvement. The thirty-one members include three students representing each of the six congressional districts and the remaining serve at large. Applicants must be between the ages of fourteen and nineteen and enrolled in a public or private high school, charter school, home school, or GED skills program during the 2024-2025 school year. The deadline to apply is March 15, 2024. The application may be accessed at civiced.louisiana.gov and then by clicking on LYAC at the top of the page. All applicants are required to submit two recommendation letters in addition to the eight short essay questions on the application form.
Lyle Leaders – If you are interested in attending Louisiana Youth Seminar this summer, please see Mrs. Prothro as soon as possible.  We have three scholarships available.  They will a) go to the students who have chosen to attend the field trip on 2-22-24 and or b) have attended in the past.  If you are unsure of what LYS is, see Mrs. Prothro, or look it up on their website.  It is a week long leadership camp in Baton Rouge during the summer.  We need to register ASAP.
11th Graders- If you are interested in Boys’ or Girls’ State, see Mrs. Prothro ASAP.  Registration is open, and we need to get this information turned in ASAP.

9th – 12th Grade Students – We need a group of students to represent Byrd at ArtBreak for the Battle of the Books contest.  The books being used in this competition are: Cheer Up, Any Sign of Life, Kneel, House of Hollow, and Perfectly Parvin.  If you have read any or all of these books, or you are an avid reader and would like to participate in this contest, please see Mrs. Prothro.  The competition will be on April 12, 2024, at ArtBreak.

ACT Testing – on Wednesday, March 20th, all 11th grade students and a select group of 12th grade students will take the ACT.  There is no cost to students.  SENIORS you will be scheduled to test if you meet the eligibility criteria.  Contact Mrs. Eason in the counseling office to find out if you will be scheduled to test.

 

10th and 11th graders – The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) is accepting applications from qualified high school sophomores and juniors interested in attending the SAME/Army Engineering and Construction Camp, June 9-15, 2024, in Vicksburg, MS. Forty students from across the nation will be competitively selected to attend the camp. The students will engage in hands-on engineering and construction activities under the mentorship and supervision of SAME professionals and others from the local engineering community.  The program includes interaction with representatives of architecture/ engineering firms, construction companies, Military leaders, and Corps of Engineers’ employees. The camp fee is $100 for selected campers, and the deadline for applications is March 15, 2024. Students can fill out the attached application or apply online HERE. A Young Hero is defined as an exceptional individual who has excelled in academics, given significantly of themselves through public service, overcome adversity, exhibited extraordinary heroism, or inspired others through their deeds and strength of character to become better students, persons, and citizens. Student Opportunity – Providence House is seeking applications from high school students interested in serving on the 2023-2024 Youth Advisory Board of Directors.  We are expanding our current youth board.  This leadership role works with the larger governing board and offers hands-on experience in philanthropy, fundraising, leadership and planning.  The Youth Board has its own budget, leadership team and they get to plan events and use their voices to support all efforts around homelessness as well as community leadership.  This is an amazing opportunity for young people to make a difference. Contest – The International Exhibition on Animals in Art is back! 2024 will mark the 31st Animals in Art exhibition hosted by the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. Please share with artists and artistic friends! All are welcome to enter. Animals in Art pieces must depict an animal (fish and insects are considered animals for the purposes of this exhibition). Scholarship – The Shreveport Chapter of the Links, Incorporated, a community non-profit organization, will award three $1000.00 academic scholarships in the spring of 2024 to senior African American Female students from Caddo, Bossier and DeSoto Parish high schools. This is a competitive process. Therefore, GPAs and ACT scores will be used in scoring eligibility, along with extra curricula activities, community service and honors received. In addition, scholarship recipients must have plans to enroll in a college or university in 2024, summer or fall. The Louisiana Life Safety & Security Association is offering scholarships to sons and daughters of active-duty Law

The Bossier Federal Credit Union’s scholarship program will award $2500 in scholarship money this year. Scholarships are available in the Counseling office, the Class of 2024 Counseling Canvas page, or www.bossierfcu.org/scholarships. Deadline to apply is March 18, 2024.

 

Scholarship – The Trey Burford Memorial Scholarship application is available in the Counseling Office, or the Class of 2024 Counseling Canvas page. The first place award is a one-time scholarship of $4,000 available to a member in good standing of the North Louisiana High School Fishing League (North Louisiana HSFL). Students must be seniors and have a 3.0 gpa. The scholarship was established in memory of Trey Burford to provide assistance to a young angler who exhibits the characteristics of good sportsmanship, teamwork, love of the outdoors and the desire to be a person who makes a difference in the world. There is no stipulation on the field of study and those planning to attend Technical schools are welcome to apply, as well as accredited conventional Colleges and Universities. The students must be enrolled as a full-time under-graduate student. *** The application must be received by Friday, April 5, 2024 by 3:00 pm.

 

Contest – The Broadmoor Neighborhood Association (BNA) is hosting a Broadmoor Neighborhood 100th Birthday Celebration and sponsoring an essay contest. The theme is History of Broadmoor. Essays should be 500 words and seniors from Byrd, Caddo Magnet, and Captain Shreve High Schools are eligible to participate. Students are not required to be a Broadmoor resident. Seniors- The Hagan Scholarship is available at www.hsfmo.org. This is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship that provides up to $7500 each semester for up to 8 consecutive semesters. Applicants must have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and plan to work 240 hours from January 1, 2024-the completion of the 2024 fall semester of college. Applicant’s adjusted gross household income reported for 2022 Federal Income Tax purposes must not have exceeded $85,000.

Seniors – Every year at C.E. Byrd, the Senior class gifts a monetary donation to the school to go towards improvement projects or classroom needs on campus. Some of past projects funded are the awnings in Jack’s landing, Courtyard furniture, equipment for the science lab, new floors in the Learning Center and most recently, the class of 2023 will fund the anatomy tables for the new anatomy lab. Seniors – Seniors we only have 125 seniors that have ordered cap and gowns. Starting March 14th, the price of the gowns will go up to $100, and April 15th is the deadline to order.

 

Seniors– In order to graduate, all students must complete a financial aid step. You must complete one of these options:

1. Complete the FAFSA- the FAFSA is now available. You can complete it at www.studentaid.gov. Mrs. Byrd will send step-by-step instructions if needed as soon as this is available. You will be completing the 2024-2025  FAFSA. The FAFSA is your application for federal grants, student loans, and is also a TOPS application. Once completed, you will receive an e-mail confirmation. Please forward that to asbyrd@caddoschools.org so I you can be cleared for graduation.

2. Complete the Louisiana TOPS application at osfa.la.gov

(You do not have to complete both the FAFSA and TOPS application. If you complete the FAFSA, you are also applying for TOPS) If you complete this instead of the FAFSA, send your confirmation to asbyrd@caddoschools.org.

3. Sign a financial aid waiver. You may pick up one in the Counseling Office. If you do this, you will not receive any federal or TOPS money for college/technical school.

Seniors – Updated transcripts are now available in the Counseling Office. Each student will receive a copy of the transcript during Senior Orientation in English IV classes. If you need one prior to that visit, you can pick one up in the Counseling Office. Transcripts and transcript information cannot be e-mailed or provided over the telephone.  All public colleges and universities in Louisiana have access to transcripts and you should not have to send them. If they tell you they cannot access the transcript, or if you need to send a transcript to a private school within Louisiana, or any school outside of Louisiana, you will need to complete the transcript request form at  https://www.locallevelevents.com/events/details/26815. Make sure you submit payment and complete the google form on that page.  Students applying to colleges through the Common App do not have to complete the transcript request form. The transcript will be uploaded on the Common App portal.

 

Seniors – If you plan to attend the University of Virginia as your top choice school and want to be nominated for the Jefferson Scholarship, please notify Mrs. Byrd in the Counseling Office.

 

SeniorsElks Student of the month scholarship applications are available in the counseling office. Each month (October-April) a scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding senior boy and senior girl who demonstrate exemplary standards. Students should be well-rounded with leadership, citizenship, service, and scholarship qualities. Students will compete against other high school students in Caddo-Bossier area. Applications are due by the 15th of each month and only need to be submitted once.
