WELCOME TO OUR MILITARY FAMILIES!

Over the past 100 years, Byrd High School has boasted a rich history that includes many firsts.  We are now proud to announce the establishment of our Purple Star School Initiative.  Our goal is to promote understanding and acceptance of our military families by connecting them with non-military students and families. We are committed to supporting in-coming families by ensuring a smooth transition both to the school and the Byrd community. Welcome to the City!

Please contact Andrea Bryant if you have any questions.

STS TEAMS

Student 2 Student is a student-led and faculty-advised program with the mission to take care of our new military-connected students. Our goal is to show students their new campus and introduce them to their new community. The program provides fun ways for new students to get to know other students, build new peer groups and encourage new students to perform better in school. As a student-led organization, S2S impacts the entire student body by uniting the campus to build a culture of inclusion. The results are improved academic performance and positive peer-to-peer interactions.

MEETING DATES:  First Tuesday of each month during E.I.P. ( Extended Instructional Period) after first period

Our S2S Team members will serve as ambassadors and peer leaders who:

  • Welcome every new student who enrolls in their school on that student’s first day.
  • Give new students a welcome packet and tour of the school with a map showing them their classes and important locations on campus.
  • Ensure new students eat lunch with someone and help them feel acclimated and comfortable.
  • Check back with new students after a few days and weeks to see how they are adjusting.
  • Host social events and meetings for new students and current members to learn about each other and build new connections.
  • Engage in school and community service projects that exemplify the core values of the program and offer students the opportunity to connect with others.
  • Educate the principal, school staff, parents, and community about the program’s mission.
  • Provide a meaningful way to say goodbye once they learn a student is moving.
  •  Seek guidance from their sponsor if they notice a new student or current member is having difficulties or may need additional support.

Our Parent2Parent Team will support in-coming families with the special challenges they face as they transition to the Byrd community.  Their experiences will serve as an invaluable resource to families new to the area.
