Students – On behalf of the School of Graduate Studies at LSU Health Sciences Center at Shreveport, you are invited to our first Graduate Research and Student Preparation (GRASP) event. This is a chance to learn more about biomedical research opportunities at the high school, undergraduate and graduate levels, and the many career paths that can be pursued with a science degree. The event will take place over two days, with the evening of November 1st from 4.30-6.30pm. Students and parents are welcome. If unable to attend that evening, drop by for 1-2 hrs on November 2nd, between 10am-3pm. You will learn about the research programs on our campus, meet students, alumni and faculty and tour labs.
Wrestling – Think you want a challenge? Wrestling season workouts have started! If you think you may be interested come down to wrestling room after school and speak with coaches. You can also sign up through Aktivate. Don’t wait, get in the best shape of your life!!
Dual enrollment applications are now available for LaTech Winter enrollment. Winter quarter registration is only available for students who were not able to register for Fall quarter classes. Students already enrolled in a dual enrollment course, and wish to continue, will wait for Spring quarter registration. Students in the following courses can apply- AP US History-Rowe, AP European History- Lary, English IV enriched- Williams, English IV GT- Smith, English III Honors- Waxham, English III GT- Smith. Byrd will pay ALL dual enrollment courses this year. Students are encouraged to apply early. Instructions are available from these teachers, or cebyrd.com. Please read all information carefully and complete all required steps. Deadline to apply is Friday, November 1 at 4pm. Documents must be received in the Counseling Office by that time. Please contact the 11th or 12th-grade counselor if you have any questions. 11th grade- Tamiko Lacy- tslacy@caddoschools.org. 12th grade- Amanda Byrd- asbyrd@caddoschools.org Students should not use a school e-mail address to apply. Since it’s the 100th year, Student Council and Drama Club are starting a fun Scavenger Hunt every other week for Byrd students. Look around the school and follow the hints to receive a prize!
Rules:
- Do not move, break, or destroy school or personal property to reach the item.
- Bring Winner paper to Mrs.Carberry in room 202.
- You cannot search during class time.
- You must bring the item to Mrs.Carberry in between classes.
- Winner will be announced on the following Monday.

For Southfield School Alumni – Southfield School’s annual Grandfriends Day will take place on Friday, November 22nd. As in previous years, Southfield is seeking student volunteers to assist with the event, and were hoping to recruit former Southfield students for this important role. Volunteers would need to be at Southfield by 8:15 AM, and their responsibilities would conclude by 11:30 AM, allowing them to return to their regular schedules after the event. ASTRA CLUB – Happy October ladies! We are so excited for a great start of the year! We are so proud of those of you who participated in the months of August and September in our Astra events. And we have a lot of you working towards the 100 hours of service with service with your churches and community as well! All of that is amazing! Be sure to log any and all hours on your log sheet but don’t double dip with Z-Club. We would like for you to have 10 hours completed by the end of each nine weeks but realize many of you have not gotten that done. So, we are going to extend that into the 2nd nine weeks and allow you to get 20 cumulative hours before you leave us for Christmas break! Be sure to watch the modules for ways you can get involved.

Contest – The John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest is available at www.jfklibrary.org/essaycontest. Students in grades 9-12 must write an original and creative essay that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage. Top 25 Students Receive Awards- First-place prize is $10,000. The deadline to apply is 1/17/25.
Elks Student of the month scholarship applications are available in the counseling office or the Class of 2025 Canvas page. Each month (October-April) a scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding senior boy and senior girl who demonstrate exemplary standards. Students should be well-rounded with leadership, citizenship, service, and scholarship qualities. Students will compete against other high school students in Caddo-Bossier area. Applications are due by the 10th of each month and only need to be submitted once.
The Willis Knighton/Independence Bowl Community Service Scholarship application is available in the Counseling Office and on the Class of 2025 Canvas Page. One $2500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior with plans to attend a four-year college. Students must have a 3.0 minimum grade point average and provide documented dedication to community service limited to junior and senior years only. Students must submit applications to Mrs. Byrd in the Counseling Office by 4pm on Monday, October 14.
